The process of sample collection can vary depending on what water source you are collecting from, and what parameters you are wanting. We can provide regular sample collection bottles as well as sterile collection bottles required for bacteria analysis. Additional guidance is outlined below for each method of sample collection.

From an Outdoor Well

To get a sample representative of your well water, we recommend that you allow the pump to run for at least ten minutes to flush out the lines before rinsing your bottle and collecting your sample.

For more information about sampling supplies and instructions, view our fact sheet on Collecting Water Samples.

From an Indoor Tap

The way you collect your sample from an indoor tap or faucet depends on what you want to know. For example, are you interested in the quality of your source water, or are you concerned about the condition of your piping system? View our fact sheet on Collecting Water Samples to find out how to properly collect yours.

Special Instructions for Bacteria Analysis

If you want to test your water for bacteria, you will need a sterile collection bottle, which you can pick up from the lab, or we can ship you a bottle. You should wear nitrile or a similar type of glove when collecting your water sample for bacteria, to avoid potential contamination of your sample.

When you collect your water sample in the bacteria container, you should not rinse the bottle.

After collecting your sample, you should put it on ice immediately and deliver it to the lab. If you must ship your sample, you should overnight it on ice, and ensure that we receive it within 24 hours of when you collect it. Bacteria Analysis Form
